"There's no reason only poor people should get malaria".

Every year malaria afflicts between 300 and 500 million people, causing about to 2.7 million deaths, generally black and brown children under five years of age and mainly in poor areas of Africa and Southeast Asia.

In 1972 pseudo-science was used to Ban DDT and "Save the Pelican". Pelican populations slowly rebuilt themselves - to the point that today, the U.S. pelican census is now about 620,000, according to federal estimates.

Since then more than 100 million poor people have died (36 X 2.7 million) and billions have suffered. This ban killed twice as many children as WWII killed people.

So when you see a majestic Pelican.... think of the 161 children that died for each single bird. They were poor, black or brown, usually struck down before age five, shaking with augue, delirious with fever and in immense pain. Try not to think of the loss each parent, sibling, family and village felt.

ALTERNATIVELY (and worse) -

Population control advocates blamed DDT for increasing third world population. In the 1960s, World Health Organization authorities believed there was no alternative to the over-population problem but to assure than up to 40 percent of the children in poor nations would die of malaria. As an official of the Agency for International Development stated, "Rather dead than alive and riotously reproducing." [Desowitz, RS. 1992. Malaria Capers, W.W. Norton & Company]

Quote of the Day

Todays Churchill Thought

Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy and the lash.

Factoids

Crocodiles and alligators are surprisingly fast on land. Although they are rapid, they are not agile, so if you ever find yourself chased by one, run in a zigzag line. You'll lose him or her every time.
